The Monitor’s print circulation is currently about 60,000, and we have about 2 million unique visitors a month at csmonitor.com.

As I’m sure you know, the Monitor’s journalistic standards are extremely high, and it can be difficult for us to find freelancers who are up to the task. We’re looking for reporters who can provide context and analysis: We want the “why,” when so often, journalists stop at the “what.” In addition, the shaping of our stories tends to have a certain sophistication that can be hard for freelancers to grasp. While we’re happy to help reporters along in this endeavor, it’s often just a bridge too far.

But I’m happy to say that you delivered a story that worked really well for the Monitor. In fact, I’d say that it was one of the most camera-ready first-time submissions to National that I’ve seen in my six years in the department.

I thought your story had a really nice tone, with some clever touches, and it provided good insight into the city of Cleveland. I heard compliments from others, too.

Jacquie, it was a pleasure working with you, and we’d be very happy to take more stories from you (if you can bear our low payment rates!). Just let me know if I can be of further help for your reappointment file – and feel free to e-mail any story ideas you may have.

Judy
