White Coats

[pullquote]Unshaven and looking as eager as he can on three hours’ sleep, Mike Norton paces a long, narrow hallway of The Cleveland Clinic where patients await surgical consultations. A surgeon he’s not, not yet – maybe not ever if his wife gets her way. But five weeks into his surgical rotation, Mike wonders if he can be happy doing anything else.[/pullquote]

This series explains significant issues in medical education through the experiences of three students as they struggled to master the ever-increasing load of medical science, confront problems of professionalism, learn the importance of empathy and make the personal sacrifices – crushing debt, round-the-clock work and willful neglect of family, friends and health – required to become doctors. Installments were published in August and September 2006, August 2007, August 2008 and August 2009.

The 2009 installment includes a multimedia slideshow I produced with photojournalism adjunct professor Tim Harrison.
